Prof. Dr. iur. Andrea Opel studied Law at the University of Basel (specialising in tax law). She then worked as an academic assistant under Prof. Urs Behnisch's Chair and completed her doctorate in 2008 with a thesis entitled 'Tax treatment of family foundations, founders and beneficiaries – in national and international relations'. After completing her doctorate she was employed as a tax advisor at the Zurich law firm Meyerlustenberger Lachenal (currently serving as a consultant) and as lecturer in Corporate Tax Law at the Universities of Lucerne and Basel.

Andrea Opel has held a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Tax Law since 1 August 2010. She is also a member of the board of the Institute of Business Law at the University of Lucerne, as well as a member, actuary and questor of the SATLP (Swiss Association of Tax Law Professors).
