Walter Fellmann, born in 1955, grew up in Lucerne where he attended primary and cantonal school. He completed his studies at the University of Berne in 1980, gaining his licentiate. He went on to obtain licences to practice as a lawyer (1981) and a notary public (1983) in the canton of Lucerne. He has since been a practising lawyer with the firm Fellmann Tschümperlin Lötscher in Lucerne.

Walter Fellmann completed a doctorate in law at the University of Bern in 1984. In 1993 he completed post-doctoral studies with a Berner Kommentar on the law of mandate at the University of Zurich. Since being awarded the venia legendi, Walter Fellmann has given regular lectures and classes on the Code of Obligations at the University of Zurich. In 1994/95, he was given a lectureship in the Code of Obligations by the University of Fribourg as a substitute for Professor Peter Gauch. In August 2000 the University of Zurich named Walter Fellmann a titular professor, and in February 2001 he was selected as part-time associate professor for Swiss and European Private Law at the University of Lucerne. Walter Fellmann was promoted to part-time professor from 1 April 2004 and has been a full professor since February 2011.

Walter Fellmann has been working as a freelance lawyer in Lucerne since 1983. From 1984 to 1986 he acted as Vice President of the arbitration board for rent and leases in the canton of Lucerne. From 1986 to 1991 he worked as a part-time administrative judge in the tax law department of the administrative court for the canton of Lucerne. From 1993 to 1995, Walter Fellmann was an actuary member of the Lucerne Bar Association board of directors, subsequently becoming chairman from 1995-1999. From 1993 to 2005 he was a substitute member of the supervisory authority for the lawyers of the canton of Lucerne, and from 1997 to 2006 a member of the arbitration committee for the Central Switzerland Chamber of Commerce. As a co-founder of the Foundation for Legal Education, Lucerne, Walter Fellmann was a member of the institution’s Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2006. Since 2001, Walter Fellmann has been a member of the editorial team of the ‘Haftpflicht und Versicherung’ journal (HAVE – ‘liability and insurance’), and he has been Chairman of the School Board of the Lucerne Cantonal High School since 2002. In 2007 he was elected a member of the Faculty Board of the University of Lucerne School of Law, a position he held until 2014. Since 2010 Walter Fellmann has been the Director of Continuing Education in Law, the further education initiative of the School of Law at the University of Lucerne.
