Reto Babst studied medicine at the University of Bern. After completing his doctorate in Bern, he became a specialist in surgery, especially general surgery and traumatology in Basel. He received several scholarships for surgery and trauma surgery. These took him to the Hospital for Special Surgery NY, to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore MA and to Dortmund (Germany), he was a visiting Professor in Harborview Medial Center Seattle as well as in Peoples 6th Hospital in Shanghai among others. In 2005 he received his venia legendi at the University of Basel, in 2010 he was appointed titular professor of surgery.
Reto Babst worked for many years at Lucerne Cantonal Hospital as the Head of the Department of Surgery, a member of the Executive Board and Chief Physician and Clinical Director of the Clinic for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery. At the University of Lucerne, he is the founding Professor of Medical Science of the Department of Health Science and Medicine and he is leading the Joint Medical Master Programm, a cooperation between the University of Lucerne and the University of Zurich.
